Grantica is proud to announce the release of the Grantica R&D Framework (GRDF) 2.0 Toolkit, the first publicly available standard for the structured assessment and certification of R&D tax relief claims.
The Toolkit, which is freely available to claimant companies and tax advisors, introduces a new layer of rigour, transparency, and accountability to R&D claim preparation, replacing vague narrative submissions with evidence-based, auditable reports.
Developed by former HM Revenue & Customs tax specialists and industry experts, the Toolkit is designed to reduce the risk of non-compliant claims and investigations by introducing independent assessments into the R&D claims process.
The Toolkit contains three integrated components
• GRDF 2.0: a framework for assessing the eligibility of a potential R&D tax relief claim
• Guidelines on the Application of the GRDF 2.0 Toolkit: clear instructions for applying the framework and its assessment methodology
• GRDF 2.0 Assessment Methodology: structured questions with guidance, pass/fail logic, and clearly documented outcomes
When applied, the Toolkit produces a Certified Assessment Report that offers claimants, advisors, and HMRC greater clarity and confidence.
Mark Doodney, co-author of the Toolkit and a former HM Revenue & Customs tax specialist, states: “What motivated me to co-develop the Toolkit was the need for a consistent approach that professionals could rely on — and stand behind. The Toolkit helps mitigate the risk of HMRC enquiries and penalties by introducing an assessment process that is transparent, auditable, and professionally accountable. It’s a resource I believe every serious R&D advisor can benefit from.”
Mohamed Dafea, co-author of the Toolkit and co-founder of tax advisory firm Grantica, states: “Throughout my 25-year career in the oil and gas and tech sectors, independent certification has always been the foundation for credible decision-making. Applying that same principle to R&D tax relief is long overdue. The Toolkit removes subjectivity, improves claim quality, and gives genuine claimants; whether first-timers or experienced, the peace of mind they deserve.”
Oliver Williams, co-author of the Toolkit and former R&D tax director, states: “This Toolkit is more than just a new approach, it’s a genuine shift in the R&D tax space. Instead of another checklist, it gives us a clear, structured way to assess claims properly. The result is a Certified Assessment Report that carries real weight. It’s built on evidence, reviewed independently, and designed to stand up to challenge, much like the standards we see from the ISO. For claimants, advisors, and HMRC alike, it brings something we all need more of: Trust.”
