Grantica toolkit to standardise R&D tax relief claims

Reported in: International Accounting Bulletin

The toolkit is designed to mitigate the risk of non-compliant claims and potential investigations.

Grantica has unveiled the Grantica R&D Framework (GRDF) 2.0 Toolkit, a publicly available framework designed to provide a structured assessment and certification of R&D tax relief claims.

This introduces enhanced rigour, transparency, and accountability to the preparation of Research and Development (R&D) claims, aiming to replace less precise narrative submissions with evidence-based, auditable reports, the company said.

The toolkit, available at no cost to claimant companies and tax advisors, was crafted by former HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) tax specialists and industry professionals.

It is designed to mitigate the risk of non-compliant claims and potential investigations by incorporating independent assessments into the R&D claims process.

Toolkit co-author and former HM Revenue & Customs tax specialist Mark Doodney said:

“What motivated me to co-develop the Toolkit was the need for a consistent approach that professionals could rely on — and stand behind.

“The Toolkit helps mitigate the risk of HMRC enquiries and penalties by introducing an assessment process that is transparent, auditable, and professionally accountable. It’s a resource I believe every serious R&D advisor can benefit from.”

Comprising three integrated components, the GRDF 2.0 Toolkit offers a framework for evaluating the eligibility of a potential R&D tax relief claim.

It provides clear instructions for applying this framework and its assessment methodology, as well as structured questions with guidance, pass/fail logic, and well-documented outcomes.

When implemented, the toolkit generates a Certified Assessment Report, enhancing clarity and confidence for claimants, advisors, and HMRC alike.

Grantica co-founder and toolkit co-author Mohamed Dafea said: “Throughout my 25-year career in the oil and gas and tech sectors, independent certification has always been the foundation for credible decision-making.

“Applying that same principle to R&D tax relief is long overdue. The Toolkit removes subjectivity, improves claim quality, and gives genuine claimants; whether first-timers or experienced, the peace of mind they deserve.”
